Sheldon Students Attend Team Spirit in Columbia

By Lockard, Christy on September 16, 2013

Nine students from the Sheldon High School attended the Team Spirit Training in Columbia, Missouri on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, July 25-27, 2013. The Team Spirit Training was a Traffic Safety Leadership Training Conference sponsored by: Cape Girardeau Safe Communities Program and the Missouri Department of Transportation Traffic and Highway Safety Division.  The nine students attending from Sheldon High School were Dani Hibbitts, Camie Ford, Zoey Bray, Beth Spencer, Melissa Handle and George Shelton, Jacob McCartney, Tristen Walker, and Corey Baney along with two advisers, Christy Lockard and Christy Worsley.

Throughout the three-day training students and advisers attended workshops. Some of these workshops were MO Safe and Sober by Mark Peck; Teen Tragedy by Pam Holt; Drug Trends by Msgt Jason Henke; an Adviser’s Workshop by Dr. Tim Crowley; Think First—Use Your Mind to Protect Your Body by Penny Lorenz and speakers; Gone Too Soon by Sgt. Paul Reinsche, Missouri State Highway Patrol; No Zone by Missouri Trucking Association and Wal-Mart. They also participated in team building activities and the “Team Spirit Olympics.”

Our training started around 1 p.m. on Thursday and went through 11:30 p.m.Then we were back up and going to training at 7:30 a.m. Friday morning until 11:00 p.m. Friday night. Saturday we started training again at 7:30 a.m. and then the training concluded around 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon, which meant we didn’t arrive back to Sheldon until 9:00 p.m.

It was three great days of training. Be sure to watch for activities sponsored by the Sheldon Team Spirit Students. They are planning “Red Ribbon Week” for students in Preschool through 12th grade for the last week in October. They are also planning a day of activities for “Don’t Do D.A.T. Plus” in the spring. Remember that “Don’t Do D.A.T. Plus” stand for don’t do drugs, alcohol, and tobacco plus wearing your seatbelt and practicing safe road habits in cars and on bicycles.

The Sheldon Team Spirit also hosted a team building event on the first day of school from everyone in grades K-12. It was fun and the students seemed to enjoy it.

Watch for more great things to come from the Sheldon Team Spirit Students!
